#45: The Science of Yoga with Eddie Stern

16 Feb 2020

On the podcast today I welcome Eddie Stern

Eddie is a yoga teacher, author, and lecturer from New York City. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to furthering education and access to yoga, as well as his teaching expertise in Ashtanga Yoga.

His bestselling first solo book, One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga, examines in clear and simple language the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms that make yoga an effective practice.

We had a really great conversation today and some of the topics that I discussed with Eddie were:

  • How a punk rocker in the 70s became a Yoga teacher to the celebrities in New York
  • His time spent travelling in India and learning from the great masters of Yoga while on his travels
  • Why consciousness is an important concept to fathom and how the process of learning ‘who we are’ is important, rather the achievement
  • The studies that Eddie has been involved in, that demonstrate Yoga as an important  tool for cardiovascular health
  • The vagus nerve as a  root to mindfulness and changing your autonomic nervous system function

Do have a look at at the Summary and Guest Info sections below where I’ve added a ton of more information that Eddie has been involved in and also some really interesting articles on The Vagus Nerve which I know you will find super interesting!

As a species we have survived because of stress and the stress response, which is when the sympathetic nervous system brings us into a hyper arousal so that we can preserve life.  Thats what fight or flight is.

Eddie Stern

I really hope that you enjoyed the conversation with Eddie as much as I did, what a super guest and its so interesting to hear more about the benefits of yoga based on Eddies experience. I really would encourage you to watch the YouTube video that is linked below on the clinical study that Eddie was involved in with African American patients and the effects of yoga on blood pressure.  It really does paint an impressionable picture on why Yoga is a potential effective tool and why scientists are actually looking at Yoga in a whole number of different specialties; including gut health, immune health, and mental health too.
